Using the potential form to say you can do something

Use the potential form (〜られます for ichidan, 〜えます ending for godan) to express ability or possibility.

ichidan: stem + られます | godan: う→えます | する→できます

Rebuild the pattern

  1. Identify verb groupIchidan (eru/iru ending) or godan?
  2. Form potentialIchidan: add られます to stem. Godan: change final u-sound to e + ます.
  3. Object particleThe object often changes from を to が with potential verbs.
