L2-SEQ-05Level 2 GrammarSequence

Linking actions in sequence with the て-form

Use the て-form to chain two or more actions together — doing one thing and then another.

verb₁-て + verb₂

Warm-up

Read and notice

  1. おきて、 シャワー を あびて、 がっこう へ いきます。I wake up, have a shower, and go to school.
  2. しゅくだい を して、 ゆうしょく を たべます。I do homework and then eat dinner.

Structure drill

Rebuild the pattern

  1. First actionPut the first verb into て-form.
  2. Second actionAdd the next verb — it can also be て-form if there are more actions.
  3. Final verbThe last verb carries the tense for the whole sentence.

Controlled practice

Use the lesson frames

  1. Rewrite this frame with your own class topic: I wake up, have a shower, and go to school.おきて、 シャワー を あびて、 がっこう へ いきます。
  2. Underline the grammar chunk you must keep unchanged in this pattern, then adapt the rest.しゅくだい を して、 ゆうしょく を たべます。

Comic strip response

Explain the conversation

  1. Daily routineあさ、なに を しますか。シャワー を あびて、あさごはん を たべて、うちを でます。
  2. Weekend planどこ へ いきますか。えき で ともだち に あって、いっしょに えいが を みます。

Independent output

Make it your own

  1. Write one sentence about your own life using L2-SEQ-05.
  2. Write one sentence linked to class topic work.
  3. Circle the watch-out you need to check most carefully.
    • The tense of the whole sentence is set by the final verb — the て-form verbs in the middle are tenseless.
    • Do not use a full stop or です after each て-form verb in the sequence.
